They seem to pop up just about everywhere.īut how exactly did this practice come to be? They refer to black Africans and Caribbean contributions to war in the 16th century. Public figures from the local mayor to the Queen of England dawn them proudly. Black poppy flowers are also commonly used as a symbol of remembrance. ![]() ![]() The poem features the line In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow. What brought it back The Falklands in 1982, reminding us that we had not done with war. They chose the poppy in recognition of a famous WW1 poem called In Flanders Fields. Offices would certainly not have fallen silent at 11 am. In the weeks preceding Remembrance Day, we see the red flower pinned to people’s lapels. Remembrance Sunday was observed in churches, rather unenthusiastically, but Armistice Day November 11 hardly at all. The day is also marked by one very important and iconic symbol: the poppy.
